So far so good with the latest update... Hopefully they fixed all the bugs with the app (its been about a year since their last app actually worked and did what it was supposed to). So far, this seems to be working well;thankfully, as I really like getting the news on POLITICO.
The new app update fixed the news updating process and the app is much quicker. Ive always liked the look of this app as well as the articles, but the news update process was messy and slow. Now it is simplified and fast and Im back to using it several times a day.
Im not sure why others are having so many issues. POLITICO is the only news app on my phone and it works great! I rely on it to keep on top of election news.
Ive had it now for a couple of weeks and havent experienced any of the the issues mentioned below. I like it better than the Washington Post. It works great for me.
Not as far ahead as say CNN but it gets the job done with better content.

Some bad moments
Update broken for me to. Has been for several days. Why don't they fix it?
It's just broken on updates. I have given up on POLITICO app after a number of reinstalls.
New format awful. Readability, down. Video clips no longer play in app. Cant tell where the article ends and reporter byline begins. Can no longer see multiple articles without scrolling, scrolling. As an avid reader, really really dislike new format. Why the change?
The App Store is prompting me to update, but I get an error message saying This update is not compatible with your iPad when I try. Why is it prompting me to update if there is no update that is compatible?

I have been using the old POLITICO app for quite some time. I added the new app because the old app kept bringing up a nag notice telling me to upgrade.
The new app is of no value as the content is 4 to 5 days old. The old app still works, with new content, but is too frustrating because of all the nagging.
The Result is I am going to remove both apps from my iPad.
It is not easy to read the main points, and it does not update well. I hated it, my luck I still have the old version in my tablet and went back to it
